When considering the purchase of a puppy, it is crucial to remember that colour should never be the primary factor. While many may have personal preferences regarding coat colour, the health and temperament of the puppy should always take precedence.

There is a misconception that show lines are exclusively pale and that working lines are distinctly dark gold, which limits our understanding of the true spectrum of golden shades. In reality, as showcased in the accompanying images, show lines exhibit a beautiful range of golden shades. Even the palest of goldens cannot be confused with white; if placed side by side with a Samoyed, it can clearly be seen that the lightest goldens are actually a creamy tone. This diversity of colour enriches our appreciation for the breed, reminding us that the beauty of Goldens comes in many forms, each unique and deserving of recognition.

Whilst working lines do tend to be a beautiful dark gold, the colour should never be described as 'fox red', they are simply gold. However it can never be decided that a Golden is from working lines, purely based on its colour. As we can see above, show lines can also be this colour. The only true way of knowing how a dog is bred, is by looking through it's Royal Kennel Club Registration and Pedigree.

Working Lines

Thank you to Kate Stead and R Perry-Taylor Photography for allowing us to use these photographs of Kate's beautiful working goldens.

We cannot stress enough, that colour should be a preference, not the deciding factor when choosing a puppy. When finding a breeder, always consider your lifestyle and what you want to do with your puppy. A good breeder will always help and advise you if their breeding is right for your family.

Sadly Goldens are a victim of their own popularity. A great many puppy farmers have been attracted to the breed. Don't become one of their victims, and in doing so support the horrendous puppy farming trade.
